Practice Makes Perfect
There’s a reason why people always repeat this mantra—because it’s true! To do something well is to do it often. Learning to walk in heels is all about baby steps. You simply have to get used to the feeling of walking on a high, thin heel. Start by walking around your house, just for ten minutes, then twenty, until you become used to them. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel. Take a few steps on different kinds of flooring: carpet, tile, pavement, etc., as some floors will be more difficult to navigate than others. Better to get the staggering, shaking, and wavering out of the way in the comfort of your own home.
Start Small
There is no rule that states you need to start with sky-high heels. Beginners should instead opt for one of the many kitten or mid-size heel varieties available. Smaller heels come in a number of different colors, styles, and textures, and are just as chic as their taller counterparts—with fewer hazards. A smaller heel is also a good choice for those nights when you know you’ll be on your feet for extended periods of time, as the shorter height will offer style and comfort.
When All Else Fails, Wedge
If thin heels feel like too much of a challenge, you’re in luck. Wedges give you the same sexy height that a heel does, but with a lot more stability. As with any pair of heels, be sure to break them in at home, to get yourself used to the feeling of the height.
